When treats don't work

Working with dogs who lack a strong food drive to help us teach/encourage and reinforce new skills like the recall means that we take the long way around and just put in the extra reps!

A lot of dogs aren’t motivated by food and so we just go ahead and train them anyway by spending more time doing lots and lots of extra repetitions of each exercise until we’re able to build the pattern for the dog and their confidence in performing the command.

As long as you’re moving in the right direction with training, making consistent progress (even if it’s only a tiny bit some days!), building confidence, growing trust and understanding with the dog then it doesn’t matter how long it takes. There is no substitute for just putting in the work!
