WHO AM I…

Hello everybody!  My name is Kristen Cameron and I am the owner and trainer at Find Your Balance Dog Training.  We are located near Halifax in HRM, Nova Scotia.

HOW I WANT TO HELP...

Since the beginning, before I could remember anything else, the one thing that has always been consistent with me is my drive to help animals.

  • to bring order to chaos

  • to bring the unruly to polite

  • to bring good health to the ill

  • to make their lives and their worlds more peaceful and safe

One of the ways I choose to help is by working with dogs:

  • I rehabilitate these dogs by giving them a balance of structure, rules, boundaries and accountability and then passing these skills onto their owners

  • we watch them bloom, be loved, be successful and live without the labels and without the narratives of the past

  • and it all starts with the smallest steps and the truest acts of kindness... rules, boundaries, structure, discipline and accountability

My vision...

I created Find Your Balance Dog Training because my mission is to help bad dogs become good dogs and to help struggling dog owners become educated and empowered so they can love life with their dogs.  I completely understand what it is like to feel lost and frustrated with your dog because that is how I started out on my own journey.

My journey as a dog owner...

Like many of my clients, my dog was far from perfect and I desperately needed help.  My dog was intensely leash reactive when she saw other dogs and she would bark and scream and redirect her frustration by clawing and biting me.  I was afraid to walk her and I felt completely dis-empowered and bewildered by her behavior.  I understand what it is like to be controlled by an out of control dog… because it happened to me!  I tried distracting my dog with treats and toys, I tried taking her to group classes – and had to leave because her behavior was so disruptive, I tried harnesses and gentle leaders but nothing worked.  Nothing could keep her calm or break her intense cycle of explosion and painful redirection on me.  I was at my wits end.  Then, through sheer stubborn determination not to give up, I found the balance training approach.  I was so committed not to give up on my dog… even if it took a lifetime!  So I studied everything I could get my hands on about balanced training.  I read books, took courses and seminars.  I studied online, I went to private classes and shadowed other balanced trainers.  I learned how to effectively use tools and a calm balanced approach to transform my dog.  It was the most dramatic and amazing transformation.  I learned how to actually communicate with my dog in a way that she understood.  I learned that I had to change my behaviors and my lifestyle if I wanted to effect change in my dog.  I learned how to read a dog's body language and I learned a TON about dog psychology.  I learned how to be the leader that my dog was desperate for… I learned how to step into that role so that she didn’t have to.  She began to defer to my leadership and depend on me for guidance and protection and all her reactive behavior stopped.  I was able to communicate with her on the most meaningful level and our relationship strengthened and deepened and she was able to remain in a relaxed and comfortable state of mind.  I was finally the person that my dog could count on to keep things relaxed and calm for her.  My training methods and lifestyle have worked so well that I have since adopted two more dogs who live in harmony with my pack.
